The arena was officially inaugurated on August 13 and 14, 2001. The technical equipment of "Europe's most up-to-date stadium" is particularly considered to have set standards for the building of stadia. It includes the following:
  • Video cubes with four screens of 36 square metres each
  • A state-of-the-art loudspeaker system with a maximum of 108 decibel
  • Extendible pitch
  • Movable roof
  • Electronic chip system
  • Newly designed electronic parking and traffic control system
The arena sets new standards in every aspect and already meets almost all requirements for World Cup matches - five years before the start of the 2006 World Cup. "This stadium is a pilot project for the whole world", FIFA President Joseph S. Blatter said.

The Arena AufSchalke hosted its first international match against Finland on October 6, 2001.
