The brand-new Stadium of
Hamburg received its baptism of fire with the international match versus
Greece on September 2, 2000. The German national team had not played in
Hamburg since EURO 88.
From March 1998 the old stadium was demolished in four separate stages of construction, the pitch was turned and each side of the stands newly built with all functional, VIP and media areas reconstructed. All seats are covered. The positioning of the lead camera has
still be finalised. During the summer break of 2001 the VIP area was
extended by 400 seats. By the end of the year the outside surroundings
should be laid out to design.
