The originally planned reconstruction of the Olympic Stadium has been rejected. After extensive discussions the Munich City Council decided in July 2001 on the construction of a new, purely football stadium at Froettmaning in Munich's north. In a local referendum on October 21, 2001, the people of Munich gave the green light. The two clubs, FC Bayern Munich and TSV 1860 Munich, will share the costs of the project.

Following a decision made by the Experts' Committee at the end of November 2001, follow-up negotiations will now focus on just two of the originally eight design proposals that had been submitted. Accordingly, the final choice will be made between the draft project prepared by architects Herzog & de Meuron in co-operation with building contractors Alpine Bau Deutschland GmbH, and that tabled by architects gmp (Gerkan, Marg und Partner) in co-operation with the Max Bögl constructions group. The Experts' Committee's final meeting took place on 8th February, 2002. The experts decided for the draft project.

The stadium has already been outlined on paper. The following proposals have been included in the invited tenders:

  • Capacity: 66,000 seats
  • Use only designed for football (no multi-functional arena, no running lanes)
  • Covering of all seats
Completion by the summer of 2005 at the latest.
