After two years of reconstruction and modernisation works Gottlieb Daimler Stadium was inaugurated with a stadium festival on July 27-29, 2001.

The following alterations have been realised in the second reconstruction schedule:

  • A second storey accommodating 5,600 spectators was added above the grandstands.
  • All benches were changed into individual seats.
  • Forty four boxes with 678 seats plus 1,500 business seats with lounges were built in the inside area of the grandstands and the new front building.
  • Building of a multiple storey car park directly linked to the new front building with about 900 parking spaces.
  • Additional catering facilities and improvement of standards for visitors, players and media.
As from 2003 further improvements, particularly in the catering facilities, should be made in a third building stage in the opposite stands and the corners. The capacity should be increased to 60,000 seats.
